The housing slump notwithstanding, sellers of ecofriendly homes are seeing green. "Our local real-estate market is in the tank, but we're hiring people left and right to try to keep up with demand," says David Stitt, an ecofriendly builder in Arkansas. At 340 on the Park, a new green high-rise overlooking Lake Michigan in Chicago, 337 of the building's 343 units are sold—despite prices from $350,000 to more than $2 million.

If you think the twisting, soon-to-be-under-construction Chicago Spire is the only skyscraper that wants to shake up Chicago's skyline, then think again. One of the best of the rest, a freshly completed, 64-story condominium tower called 340 on the Park, is Chicago's first green residential high-rise and, for now at least, its tallest all-residential building. But those superlatives would be meaningless if this tower, which was ceremonially "unveiled" Wednesday, did not make such a robust contribution to the skyline.

Daley's vision to make Chicago the most environmentally-friendly city in the world hits another milestone this summer as 340 on the Park, the tallest all-residential tower in Chicago, nears completion as the first residential high-rise in the Midwest scheduled to meet the rigorous Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Silver certification standards of the United States Green Building Council.
